What Does The Egg Symbol Mean?

Lent, the lead up to Easter for Christians, is a time of self-sacrifice. It's a time to let go of an indulgent tendency for 40 days and commit to fasting, prayer, and reflection.

Easter is the grand finale of lent marked by a celebration for the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death on the cross. In modern society, we also celebrate Spring and the life it brings after a long, dark, cold winter. Winter a symbol of death, while Spring represents rebirth.

A symbol used to mark Easter is an egg. An egg represents potential life; within the egg is the elixir of creation. Dating back to early text from at least 3rd Century BCE, in India, a gold oval mass signifies Brahmanda, the egg of Brahma, the creator, also known as the cosmic egg. In our current reality, we are immersed in the unknown with COVID-19 looming in the background. We can only make our best guess as to what will happen next in humanity's evolution. Across the world, our experience intertwined with one another. We consciously change our behaviors for the good of all and stay in our homes. Our loved ones on the front lines work at hospitals, food, and delivery services, day in and out to care for those most vulnerable. This is our conscious collective sacrifice.

The magic of Easter rests in the eternal egg. It portrays the fertility of our planet, our wombyn, and the feminine the carriers of life. When we honor creation and each other, we can do incredible things.

We have many potentials waiting to be hatched into be-ing. I have been thinking lately, what if I lived in the moment as if I didn't have a past? What would it feel like to live in the present as if, I have never experienced pain and trauma? What if I believed from the bottom of my heart that everything that ever happened had a lesson for me to learn and help me grow. What if the people around me never meant to hurt me, but are only expressing their inner pain?

Holding on to this vision, deep in my belly, as my breath reaches its depths, a warmth creeps up in my stomach and into my chest. My heart feels like a fuzzy, soothing cloud hugging my insides. My love for all humanity sinks into my body. Much like the love of a mother as she holds her baby for the first time after giving birth. The possibilities light the sky like the 4th of July.

Today, the egg symbol shares a message of wisdom for us. We are ready to be reborn. Birth is messy, and for the most part, is drawn out and bloody. But the outcome is undoubtedly worth the unpleasant experience, a brand new vital life. Like a newborn, it will take time before we become competent in our new reality, post-Corona Virus. Let us nurture one another and this planet, gently with the love, intuition, and patience of a new mother.

Contemplation:

  • What is ready to be left in your past for good?

  • What new potentials await for you to hatch?

Happy Easter & stay curious, my dear friend.
